In some parts of the country there is a tradition to be called a New Testament church. And while I understand the sentiment that the New Testament is where we most fully see the revelation of Jesus Christ, the fact is without the Old Testament, Matthew, Mark, Luke, and John don't make sense. Because Jesus Christ is first and foremost the fulfillment of all the prophecies of the Old Testament. And we also have to understand the context in which Jesus came to earth. The New Testament is set in the context, first, of Israel and then of the world. But if you don't understand the Old Testament, then that context of Israel makes no sense. And so really the best way to know Christ in the New Testament, the best way to make sense of the New Testament is to first have a working grasp and knowledge of the Old Testament. I would even say this to the one who is considering Christ. Start in Genesis, read Genesis, read Exodus, read the whole Old Testament and see if every one of those promises are not fulfilled in the New.
