My father-in-law used to joke that he would get to the line because he was the humblest and proud of it, and while we all chuckled at that, the fact is, he was a very humble man, and he makes me think about that question, as a Christian, how do I become more humble? How do I humble myself? Well, there's an easy answer and there's a more difficult answer. The easy answer is that if you don't humble yourself, trust me, God will humble you. He will humble you through suffering, He will humble you through circumstances which sometimes are beyond even comprehension, so you will become more like Christ in humility. But if you want to actively pursue humility, really, the best way to do that is to be very, very mindful of your own sin. And so we confess sin. We're told in 1 John 1:9 that if we confess our sins, He is faithful and righteous to forgive us our sins and to cleanse us from unrighteousness. And so that pursuit of humility comes through confession of sin.
