One of the big issues facing us as Christians and it has for some decades now is the use of psychotropic medications. Do you take medication for anxiety or for depression or whatever else there may be defined by a doctor or psychiatrist as being in your life?
Well, first of all, the main issue in Scripture doesn't address whether you take psychotropic medications or not. The main issue in Scripture has to do with presence of mind. One clear issue that scripture is crystal clear about is the issue of drunkenness, that you're never to be drunk with wine. You're never to be one who uses any sort of drug that alters your state of consciousness and awareness because that puts you under someone else's jurisdiction. You're not in control. You're not able to exercise self-control.
What you do with your medications can have one of two possible indicators. One, you're using medication instead of seeking the Lord, instead of finding out what idols are in your life that you need to tear down.
But the other way, it may be that you have a physical issue. And most medications have multiple uses. And so for us as Christians to start dividing those out and saying, if you use medication for the pain in your foot, that's okay. But if you use medication that's called a depression or anxiety medication, then that's sin. And we start to get into some murky waters of legalism at that point. So this is a wisdom issue that calls for great wisdom and great insight for you personally using your conscience as a guide.
