What is the Sabbath for the Christian? That question has been a big question for many, many generations.
I remember my own grandparents, they said that Sunday is the Sabbath, and so that meant don't do anything fun. So that's how they interpreted it. The Sabbath, though, is a sign given specifically to Israel. It is the sign of the Mosaic Covenant. And so the Sabbath is not a law for Christians.
However, the concept of a Sabbath is literally built into the framework of creation. God created in six days on the seventh day he rested, and we still have those same seven days. And so while we wouldn't prescribe a law of Sabbath for Christians, the fact is that over the course of time, Christians have observed a Sabbath of sorts that we now call the Lord's Day.
And so my encouragement is always to every family to try to make the Lord's Day a Christian Sabbath, not in a legalistic sense, but in the sense of taking that day apart for worship and apart for fellowship with the people of God.
